Former Mission Control Team Member Designs a New Paddle Board.

Dateline: Friendswood, Texas (Near NASA’s Johnson Space Center Houston) December 15, 2017 — The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Glen Hegler, today issued a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to the Leslie Lightcraft Co. of Friendswood, Texas in accordance with the Texas Secretary of State.  This MOU cites the declared structure of the Lightcraft Company as a Limited Liability Company.  As per Texas State policy, legal business entities can only be declared after appropriate United States Federal registration and tax identification assignments have been made.  In this case, all Federal and Texas requirements have been met setting the official founding date as December 15, 2017.

The Leslie Lightcraft Co. has been founded by a former National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientist and mission control team member, Mr. Christopher Leslie.  The Leslie Lightcraft Company plans to introduce a new paddle board design to the outdoor and watersport market segments in the near future. Based on Human spaceflight research and development work involving spacecraft center of gravity concepts for previous NASA project Constellation, the product itself is a paddle board in a catamaran configuration designed for more stability, higher carrying capacity and boasts the ability to go further faster with less effort. 

When asked to explain how center of gravity helps his new paddle board design, Mr. Leslie explains:

“The current shape of paddle boards has evolved from original surf board designs…a long, flat, oval board shape.  The center of gravity for that type of design is a long thin line down the center of that shape.  That means if you lean slightly to the left or right of that center line, you become unstable. To stand on a paddle board is equivalent to standing on a tight wire.  Imagine a bicycle, if you sit still, you lose balance…same thing with a common paddle board design.”

The design of the Lightcraft takes that thin center of gravity line and expands it, splits it in two and widens the balance zone by having rungs or pontoon to the starboard and port side of the center.  “So, with the expanded center of gravity zone, standing on the Lightcraft is similar to standing on the deck of a boat instead of walking on a tight wire.” cites Leslie.

Further benefits of the catamaran design, as cited by Leslie, is the catamaran approach lifts most of the vehicle up out of the water, which equates to less waterflow resistance, which then equates to faster performance.  Typical paddle boards are designed so the entire surface underneath it drags the board across the surface with less of the vehicle in the water; the design produces less drag, which means the vehicle can attain higher speed with less effort.

“The other advantage of a catamaran configuration is there are higher buoyancy variables, there’s more space in the design to carry loads which means Lightcraft opens up the capacity envelope and can carry anyone with any body type.” says Leslie.

The protype is already in work in a workshop within Friendswood, Texas.  Manufacturing partners will be vetted and chosen in 2018 with a target for full production in Q2 of 2019.
